Вводные слова - Parenthetical words and phrases

Parenthetical words and phrases are used to denote the attitude of the speaker towards the idea they are expressing/saying.

Parenthetical words and phrases are not directly linked to other parts of the sentence.  In the Russian language, they are always enclosed in commas.

 

The meanings of parenthetical words	Parenthetical words (commonly used)
1.       The speaker’s confidence	действительно (really, truly); в самом деле (in reality, indeed); несомненно (undoubtedly); без сомнения (without doubt); бесспорно (indisputably); безусловно (certainly, surely); очевидно (obviously); разумеется (naturally)
2.       The speaker’s uncertainty, suggestion, doubt	может быть (maybe), должно быть (must be), по-видимому (apparently), вероятно (likely), по всей вероятности (in all likelihood), возможно (possibly, perhaps), видно (evidently), видимо (seemingly), наверное (probably), пожалуй (perhaps), кажется (it seems)
3.       The source of the spoken thought (to whom the thought belongs)	по-моему (to my mind, in my opinion, it seems to me), по-твоему (to your mind, in your opinion), по-вашему (то же самое что с по-твоему); по (моему) мнению (in (my) opinion), по общему мнению (in general opinion/view); по его (ее, их) словам (according to his (her, their) words); на мой взгляд (in my view), говорят (they say), как говорят (as they say), как известно (as is known)
4.       The speaker’s regret, embarrassment, happiness, remorse, request, gratefulness and other emotions	к сожалению (unfortunately), к несчастью (unluckily, unfortunately), к огорчению (sadly), к моему стыду (to my shame), к счастью (fortunately), к моему удовольствию (to my delight), к великой радости (to great joy), простите (I’m sorry), извините (excuse me), пожалуйста (please/you’re welcome), прошу вас (please/I beg you), благодарю ((I) thank you)
5.       A sequence of ideas or a link between the currently expressed idea and the previous one	во-первых (firstly), во-вторых (secondly), в-третьих (thirdly) и т.п., прежде всего (first of all), значит (meaning, so), стало быть (that is, meaning, so then), главное (the main thing is), однако (however), напротив (on the contrary), наоборот (vice versa, on the contrary), между прочим (by the by, among other things), впрочем (that said, however), кстати (by the way), например (for example), с одной стороны (on the one hand), с другой стороны (on the other hand), следовательно (hence, therefore), в общем (all in all, on the whole), таким образом (thus), итак (so, now then), в конце концов (after all, in the end), наконец (finally)
6.       The speaker’s wish to draw attention to the spoken idea	представьте себе (imagine, just imagine), вообразите (imagine), подумать только (just think about it, imagine), поверишь (поверите) (if you can believe it)
7.        The reference to the common nature of the spoken idea	как всегда (as always), по обыкновению (as per usual), как обычно (as usual), как водится (as is usually done), как случается (as it happens)
8.       A generalization of or an elaboration on the idea, and other meanings	одним словом (in a word), иначе говоря (in other words), коротко говоря (in short), вообще говоря (generally speaking), иными словами (in other words), признаться (to be frank/I confess/to be honest), по правде сказать (to tell the truth), так сказать (so to speak)

 

As you can see from the examples, parenthetical words and phrases can be made up from different parts of speech: verbs, adverbs, nouns with prepositions etc. For this reason, most words and phrases that can be used as parentheses, in other contexts can be parts of the sentence.
Compare:

К несчастью он отнесся спокойно. (дополнение - an object) - He took the misfortune in stride.

К несчастью, он заболел. (a parenthetical phrase) - Unfortunately, he fell ill.

 По-моему, я её уже видела. - I think I have seen her before.

Не хотите делать по-моему, пусть будет по-вашему. - If you don’t want to do it my way, let’s do it your way.

 Мы, главное, уже билеты успели купить. - The main thing is, we’ve even bought the tickets already.

Не забудь самое главное правило. - Don’t forget the most important rule.

 Он, представьте себе, даже не чувствует себя виноватым. - He, just imagine, doesn’t even feel guilty.

Представьте себе огромное здание с садом. - Imagine a huge building with a garden.

 Возможно, он просто забыл. - Perhaps he has simply forgotten.

Не думаю, что это возможно. - I don’t think this is possible.

 На мой взгляд она никак не отреагировала. - She didn’t react to my look at all.

На мой взгляд, синий цвет здесь не к месту. - In my view, blue isn’t appropriate here.
